Gary Ogan

Listening to this record today always takes me right back to my heady days of moving to Encino, CA, and living with Leon and Mary Russell. My father’s work with the BIA, meant our family relocated several times throughout my childhood, and as a result I got to experience a number of dramatically different climates growing up. Nothing had ever been quite like the sublime days I was waking up to every day via my own relocation though. The new job was working out.

My year and a half of being signed to Paradise records was a very special time. Leon introduced me to a number of iconic figures in my life including, George Harrison, Willie Nelson, JJ Cale, Howard Roberts, Jim Keltner, and John Guerin to name only a few. … And of course there was Gary Busey, Ambrose Campbell, Diane Sullivan, Roger Linn, Steve Ripley, Carl Himmel, Mickey Raphael, Connie Stevens, and on and on …

I couldn’t have been happier to see fate shine a warm and loving light on my man again recently, in the wake of Leon’s reconnection with Sir Elton. They made a great record together and put a mighty thrust of gale back into Mr. Russell’s sails, which he was over the top grateful for.

With the exception of the last song, The Road At Stains, which was written before moving to California, all the songs on this album were written over a two week period and just prior to recording them.
